ATHENS-On July 21, 2026, deputies with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office responded to Athens-Limestone Hospital after receiving a report of an infant suffering from injuries consistent with child abuse.
Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division responded to the hospital and immediately launched an investigation. During the initial response, investigators determined that the infant’s father had provided deputies with false identifying information before fleeing the area.
On the morning of July 22, 2026, investigators located and took the father into custody. During the investigation, it was also discovered that he was wanted in the State of Tennessee on a felony assault warrant.
As the investigation progressed, investigators developed probable cause indicating that the infant’s injuries were the result of abuse. The child was transported by air to a specialized pediatric medical facility and is currently listed in stable condition.
As a result of the investigation, the following individuals have been arrested:

Justin Ray Clevenger, 29, of Athens, Alabama
• Aggravated Child Abuse
• Obstructing Justice Using a False Identity
• Fugitive from Justice Hold (Tennessee Felony Assault Warrant)

Cayla Lashae Clark, 29, of Athens, Alabama
• Aggravated Child Abuse
Both individuals are currently being held in the Limestone County Jail. Bond will be determined by a judge at a later date.
Due to the ongoing nature of this investigation and to protect the privacy of the child, no additional information will be released at this time.
