Photo of Betty Joan Elliott  Betty Joan Elliott, age 80 of Double Springs, passed away Saturday, July 4th, 2026 at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. Betty Joan Elliott was born and raised in Double Springs, Alabama, where she spent her entire life. She was the beloved daughter of John and Lora Lee Lovelady and carried with her the values of kindness, hard work, and faith that were instilled in her from an early age. Joan had a servant’s heart. For many years, she lovingly cared for her mother, showing remarkable patience, compassion, and selfless devotion. Caring for others wasn’t just something she did—it was simply who she was. Education was one of Joan’s greatest passions. She earned her Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and dedicated 40 years to teaching at Lynn School. Even after retiring, her love for the classroom never faded, and she continued substitute teaching until she was 78 years old. She believed every child deserved encouragement and was blessed to make a lasting impact on generations of students. Above all, Joan loved the Lord. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she never hesitated to share it with others. One of the questions she was known for asking was, “Do you know the Lord Jesus as your personal Savior?” She genuinely cared about the eternal well-being of everyone she met and faithfully lived out her Christian beliefs through love, kindness, and compassion. Joan also found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved her home and the land where she was raised, finding peace in the beauty of God’s creation. She enjoyed spending time antiquing, searching for hidden treasures, and hunting for arrowheads—pastimes that reflected her appreciation for history, nature, and life’s simple blessings. Joan’s legacy is one of unwavering faith, dedicated service, a love for education, and a heart that always put others first. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, generous heart, and the countless lives she touched as a teacher, caregiver, mentor, and faithful follower of Christ. Her memory will forever be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. Visitation will be Thursday, July 09, 2026 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Rock Creek Baptist Church in Double Springs, where the service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at Rock Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
