Jackson Daniel “Jackie” Coulter, known simply as “Coach” to generations of students and athletes, passed away at the age of 86.
Funeral service for Jackson “Jackie” Daniel Coulter, 86, will be Sunday, July 5, 2026, at 4:00 PM at Graveside at Roselawn Cemetery with Bro. Jimmy Legg officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. No public visitation is scheduled.
Born on September 11, 1939, to James T. Coulter and Eileen Coulter, Jackie was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and coach. On August 15, 1959, he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Vicki McCulloch Coulter. Their marriage spanned nearly 67 years and was the foundation of a family that became their greatest source of pride and joy.
A proud graduate of Athens State University, Jackie excelled both on and off the basketball court. He earned All-Conference honors during his junior and senior seasons, led the Gulf South Conference in scoring during his senior year, and was honored as Mr. Athens State University. His love for the game led him into a distinguished coaching career that spanned Union Hill, Morgan County, West Morgan, and Hartselle. He later served as Assistant Principal at Hartselle High School, where he continued to impact the lives of countless students. To generations of students and athletes, he was known simply as “Coach.” More than a teacher, coach, or administrator, Jackie was a mentor, role model, and friend whose influence extended far beyond the classroom and basketball court. Among his fondest basketball memories were leading the 1973 West Morgan team to the state playoffs and coaching in the Alabama All-Star Basketball Game.
Jackie was a simple man who found joy in the things he loved most: vintage cars, Kentucky basketball, working in his yard, and spending time with family. He never needed much to be happy.
Of all the roles he held throughout his life, none meant more to him than being “Pappy.” Jackie and Vicki were a beloved Pappy and Meme to their grandchildren, who were truly their greatest joy. Some of their family’s most treasured memories were made together at the lake and at the beach, where summers were spent making memories that will be cherished for a lifetime. Though many knew him as Coach, those who loved him most simply knew him as Pappy.
Jackie was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki McCulloch Coulter. He is survived by his two sons, Jackson Daniel Coulter II (Morgan) and Victor Lee Coulter; his three grandchildren, Hannah Coulter Williams (Zachary), Jackson Daniel Coulter III, and Caroline Elizabeth Coulter; and his great-granddaughter, Margaret Louise Williams.
Jackie’s legacy lives on in the countless students he mentored, the players he coached, and the family he loved so dearly. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
