James Petty, 93 of Decatur, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 29, 2026.
James was born September 16, 1932 in Tennessee to James Ellis Petty, Sr. and Emma Baxter Petty. He was the youngest of five brothers. He retired from South Central Bell, after working in Tennessee, Huntsville, and Decatur.
He was proceeded in death by his loving wife of over 70 years, Janet Petty, four brothers, two babies, and Orville Collins, a son-in-law.
James loved to share how God had blessed them through the good and bad times. They were best buddies and friends, side by side, always together. He would tell their love story to anyone who would listen.
Over four decades, James and Janet volunteered on mission trips in 21 states. Every June, James took a four week vacation from the telephone company to go on mission trips. After he retired in 1987, he spent six-and-a half to nine months doing mission work. After Janet retired she joined James on all the missions trips. They built churches and ministered to individuals wintering on the Gulf Coast. James also went on 15 international trips, including five world countries.
His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were blessed to have such Godly example in their lives. James leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Tim (Michelle) Petty, Debbie Collins, Terry (Diane) Spurlock. Grandchildren, Bart (Mary Kate) Collins, Jessica (David) Eubanks, Jena (Jay) Sanford, Great grandchildren, Cole and Emerson Collins, Taylor and French Scarlett, Stella and Cooper Sanford.
James’ favorite bible verse, which he often quoted was, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
