A special outdoor memorial service celebrating his life will be held at Lake Arrowhead in Myrtle, Mississippi, on July 18, 2026 at 10:00.  Ripley Funeral and Cremation has been pivotal in helping with arrangements.

Born in New Albany, Mississippi, on February 16, 1955, Ernie was the third son of the late Herbert Glynn Foley and Mary Jane Courtney Foley. As an infant, he relocated with his family to Memphis, Tennessee, where he spent his youth and early adulthood. While his brothers gravitated toward sports, Ernie possessed a deep passion for academics and literature from an early age. He was often found immersed in the World Book Encyclopedia or exploring his love for English literature.

After graduating from Treadwell High School in 1973, Ernie briefly attended community college before entering the workforce. Throughout his career, he held various roles, including driver of the mail truck daily to Memphis, factory supervisor, convenience store manager and newspaper courier. To every position, Ernie brought unwavering dedication, a strong work ethic, and fierce loyalty to his employers.

Though he did not pursue further formal higher education, Ernie was a brilliant, self-taught individual and an avid reader of historical nonfiction. Blessed with a sharp mind and an exceptional memory, he became the family historian. He could effortlessly trace the Foley and Courtney family trees back several generations, cataloging every branch in meticulous detail. In his retirement, he channeled this passion into genealogy. When his health permitted, Ernie was also a skilled craftsman who enjoyed fine woodworking; notably, he hand-crafted a beautiful, high-quality baby cradle that remains a cherished family heirloom.

Ernie was a true people person who genuinely never met a stranger. He possessed a gregarious personality, a kind heart, and a deep love for both his family and his community. His unique, booming laugh was his trademark—ensuring that everyone always knew when Ernie was in the room.

He is survived by his wife, Vickie Covington Foley, son, Kyle Foley of Virginia; brother, Bill Foley (Peggy) of Bartlett, Tennessee; sister-in-law, Mary Foley of Cotton Plant, Mississippi; nieces, Tonya, Jessica, Missy, and Ashley; nephew, Glynn; and a large, loving host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and close friends.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Mary Jane Foley; his brother, David Foley; and his nephew, Craig Foley. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
