Gary Wayne Hilliard, 73, of Spencer, Tennessee, passed away peacefully but unexpectedly on June 15, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, craftsmanship, and unwavering love for his family.

Born on December 12, 1952, in Presque Isle, Maine, Gary was the son of Donald and Gladys Hilliard. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Danny Hilliard, and his sister, Donna Russell.

Gary’s life was defined by dedication; to his country, his family, and his community. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for 26 years, from September 1972 until his retirement in September 1998. During his distinguished military career, he served as a Crew Chief on both the F-111 and F-16 aircraft. His commitment to excellence, attention to detail, and strong work ethic earned him the respect of those who had the privilege to serve alongside him.

While serving in the Air Force, Gary developed and pursued a lifelong passion for aviation. He earned his private pilot’s license and continued flying long after his military retirement. He especially enjoyed building and flying rag-wing aircraft, combining his love of flight with his remarkable mechanical abilities.

Gary was known throughout the Spencer community as someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether repairing a neighbor’s equipment, helping with a project, or simply offering advice, he rarely met a problem he couldn’t solve. His children often referred to him as MacGyver. His generosity, practical skills, and willingness to help others made him a trusted friend and valued member of the community.

Of all the roles Gary held in life, the one he treasured most was that of husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He shared a beautiful love story with his wife, Linda. High school sweethearts, they recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in March. Together they built a life rooted in love, devotion, and family.

Gary loved talking about his children and took immense pride in their accomplishments. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether sharing stories, offering guidance, or simply enjoying their company, he cherished every moment spent with them. Family gatherings were among his happiest times, and the memories he created will be treasured forever.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Linda D. Hilliard; his brother, Donald “Donnie” Hilliard Jr.; his children, Gary Wayne Hilliard II, Lisa D. Burrell and husband Wayne, and Jenna L. Hilliard; his grandchildren, Ayesha Perez, Caitlyn Hall and husband Earnest, Lindsey Hilliard, Mason Hilliard, Summer Hilliard, Hannah Hawkins and husband Clay, Georgia Burrell, Brynn Randolph, and Skyler Randolph; and his great-grandchildren, Landon, Jack, Lilith, and Elowyn.

Though his passing leaves a tremendous void in the lives of those who loved him, Gary’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the lessons he taught, the kindness he shared, quirky sense of humor, and the family he cherished above all else.

A celebration of Gary’s life will be held at First Baptist Church, 1021 Old Dunlap Street, Spencer, Tennessee 38585. Service will be Saturday 20 June at 1:00 pm.

The family invites all who knew and loved Gary to join them in remembering a man whose life was marked by service, integrity, generosity, and love.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Experimental Aircraft Association of Spencer.
