Nancy S. Mathis, age 98, of Hartselle, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026.
Born on December 17, 1927, in Rincon, New Mexico to Telesforo Samaniego and
Beatriz Barela, who preceded her in death. Nancy lived a life marked by faith, hard work, and devotion to her family. She was a longtime member of Calvary Assembly of God and was known for her strong work ethic. Nancy dedicated 45 years of service to Gobble-Fite Lumber Company and continued working until the remarkable age of 88.
Family was at the center of Nancy’s life. She was preceded in death by her son, Fred Martinez; her daughter, Belinda Appleton; her granddaughter, Candy Brinkman; and was the last surviving member of a family of twelve siblings.
She leaves behind her loving daughter, Frieda Borowicz; seven grandchildren – Melia Mead, Jamie Martinez, Nick Hill, Jade Grey, Natasha Tucker, Ian Borowicz, and Blake Williams; sixteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Calvary Assembly of God from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with the funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor George Sawyer and Pastor Emilio Sanchez officiating. Nancy will be laid to rest at Burningtree Memorial Gardens.
Nancy’s faith was an important part of her life, and one of her greatest passions was supporting the Decatur Dream Center, a ministry of Calvary Assembly of God.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Decatur Dream Center in her honor.
Nancy will be remembered for her enduring faith, remarkable work ethic, and unwavering devotion to her family. She was especially known for her generosity and for the love she shared so freely with everyone around her. Her kindness touched countless lives, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Pallbearers will be Blake Williams, Ian Borowicz, Jamie Martinez, Weston Martinez, Rob Tucker, and Zeke Price.
