Born on October 16, 1974, John was a 1993 graduate of Lawrence County High School, where he proudly participated in the school band. Music remained one of the greatest passions throughout his life. He played bass guitar and sang lead vocals in a garage band called UML alongside close friends, creating many lasting memories, and he continued playing music and guitar throughout the years.

John also had a lifelong passion for technology, computers, and video gaming. Whether building, fixing, playing, or simply enjoying the latest technology, those interests brought him both comfort and joy throughout his life.

Professionally, John worked in his family’s business, Montgomery Oil Co., which later became Hager Oil Co., before working in the security systems industry with ADT.

Above all else, John loved his family. He is survived by his children, Kylyn Long, Knox Long, and Rand Long; his half-sister, Julianna Lawson; his niece and nephew, Lauren Cunningham and Isaiah Lawson; his aunts and uncles, Dyann Lentz, Kay Widner, Steve Stovall, Bill Stovall, and Patricia Montgomery; and a myriad of cousins, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jim Long; his mother, Peggy Long; his paternal grandparents, Crabel and Bera Long; his maternal grandparents, Ruis and Virginia Stovall; and his uncles, Gene Long and Roland Montgomery.

The family would also like to extend special thanks to his caregivers, Laura Letson and Abner Mirquez, for their care, compassion, and support.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 30, 2026, at 12:00 PM at 600 County Road 122, Moulton, AL 35650.
