Peggy Sue Harris Ellis, age 85, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on May 9, 2026, at Grandview Medical Center. She was born January 5, 1941, in Russellville, Alabama, the daughter of the late Athel and Lue Vernia Harris.
Sue was a graduate of Cherokee High School, St. Vincent’s School of Nursing, and The University of Alabama. She dedicated her career to nursing, working in the cardiac care unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham and later serving as an instructor in their nursing school. She continued her professional journey at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Los Angeles, California, before returning to Birmingham for retirement.
Sue enjoyed reading, traveling, shopping, and cheering on University of Alabama sports. She especially cherished time spent on her back porch enjoying nature. She supported numerous organizations and will be remembered for showing love and kindness to others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Athel and Lue Vernia Harris; her brother, Glen Harris; and her husband, Walter Ellis. She is survived by her sister, Elaine Fuller (Jimmy); her nieces and nephew, Melanie Fuller, Susan Fuller, and Chris Fuller (Tyanne); and her great-niece and great-nephew, Emma Fuller and Wyatt Fuller.
The family would like to thank her amazing neighbors, Suelyn and Lonnie Smith, her friends House Buchanan and Mimi Stanton, as well as the staff at Grandview Medical Center and Enhabit Hospice for their compassionate care.
