ATHENS-The Mims-Russell AMVETS chapter has decided to move today’s memorial in memory of slain Athens officers Anthony Mims and Sgt. Larry Russell to the Athens Police Department because of the weather. The event will be at 1 p.m.
The officers were shot and killed on this date in 2004. This is the 10-year anniversary.
AMVETS, a veterans service organization, named their local chapter after the officers.
Police Chief Floyd Johnson, Mayor Ronnie Marks and state Rep. Dan Williams, R-Athens, are among the listed speakers.
AMVETS Post 21 has been dedicated as a memorial to the two fallen Athens Alabama Police Officers killed in the line of duty. Sergeant Larry Russell and Officer Tony Mims were killed responding to a call of a person requesting to speak with the police. The suspect ambushed both officers from a window as they arrived at the residence. Officer Tony Mims died instantly in his patrol car. Sergeant Larry Russell was flown to a nearby hospital where he died an hour later.
AMVETS post 21 was established on December 17, 2009. We currently are the only active post in northern Alabama.
