THE SHOALS – Lots of folks don’t want to know the state of health that their heart is in. That’s OK. But as the saying goes, “Knowledge is power.” And there’s a relatively inexpensive way for our residents to find out about their heart health.

The Heart Health Center in Florence, part of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital (ECM), provides a relatively inexpensive service that gives people a basic understanding of how their ‘ticker’ is doing. It’s called a Coronary Artery Calcium Score. And folks can take this simple, non-invasive test at Coffee’s Outpatient Services facility on Dr. Hicks Boulevard. It only takes a few minutes to get some important info on your ‘ticker’, so that if you do need further medical attention you can have the care before anything serious develops.

Now, who wouldn’t want to do this?

According to the National Institutes of Health, “A coronary calcium scan is a test that looks for specks of calcium in the walls of the coronary (heart) arteries. These specks of calcium are called calcifications. Calcifications in the coronary arteries are an early sign of coronary heart disease(CHD). CHD is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque (plak) builds up in the coronary arteries.”
