Charles W. Cox, Jr. – Obituary

Charles W. Cox, Jr., age 94, passed away on July 2, 2018  He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Whitten Cox of Florence, AL, his parents Charles and Clara Cox, Sr. of Hampton, VA, his sisters Elizabeth C. Estes and Evelyn C. McKay, and great grandson Grayson Grier.  He is survived by his sons, C. Wesley Cox III (Cynthia) of Birmingham, AL and William (Bill) W. Cox (Cory) of Florence, AL; 5 grandchildren, Bryon Cox (Andrea), Andrea Tomlin (Phil), Mary Grier (Brad), Zachary Cox (Chelsea), and Hannah Cox; and 7 great grandchildren, Landan Grier, MaeLee Tomlin, Eli Cox, Whitten Tomlin, Sammy Cox, Jack Grier, and Douglas Cox.

 

He was born in Hampton, VA and graduated from Hampton High School in 1942.  Mr. Cox was a career U.S. Army Officer who served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War and retired in 1969 as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW4).  After retiring from the U.S. Army he worked in the Insurance industry in Florence.

 

Mr. Cox was a member of Saint Bartholomew Episcopal Church where he served on its Vestry and was awarded the Bishop’s Service Cross for his service to the Episcopal Church in Mount Pleasant, MI. He was also an active member of The Elks (BPOE), Florence Lodge 20, where he served as Exalted Ruler, a Lecturing Knight and a member of the Scholarship Committee.  Mr. Cox enjoyed golf, bowling, University of North Alabama football, and participating in the Meals on Wheels Program.  He especially loved family gatherings and attending his grandchildren’s many activities.

 

Visitation will be Saturday, July 7, 2018 from 11-12 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home.  The funeral services will begin at 12 p.m. in Greenview Memorial Chapel, with David Whitehead officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meals on Wheels, Saint Bartholomew Episcopal Church or a charity of your choice in memory of Mr. Cox.
