THE SHOALS-The global economy continues to grow through technology and innovation and skills related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are becoming more important as the percentage of jobs requiring these skills is rapidly rising.  Jobs in STEM fields often pay well with an average wage for all STEM occupations nearly double the average for all other occupations.  As the demand for STEM workers increase so too does the need for education programs to support this growth.  Shoals area high schools are placing a priority on STEM education to better prepare students for career opportunities in a variety of fields relating to engineering, science, and technology.

Niche recently conducted an analysis to determine the top STEM schools and four Shoals area public high schools were recognized for their STEM programs.  Muscle Shoals, Florence, Wilson, and Lauderdale County High Schools were ranked in the top 25 “Best High Schools for STEM” in Alabama for 2017.  The analysis used math state test scores, enrollment in advanced math and science courses, math SAT/ACT scores, and alumni interest in STEM majors and colleges to determine the rankings.

Muscle Shoals Middle School also recently announced the addition of a STEM academy to their curriculum.  The STEM academy will begin in this fall and will expose students to principles of robotics, engineering, and design.  Courses will include robotics and automation, design and modelling, and advanced robotics.  This new curriculum will be in addition to the school’s existing extra-curricular STEM activities already in place.
