A Day in May

TUSCUMBIA-Artists from across the Shoals are invited to Belle Mont Mansion on May 6 to join fellow artists Martha Carpenter and Tim Stevenson for “A Day in May.”

This fun event begins with a “tag team” demonstration by Carpenter and Stevenson, both well-known for their differing styles, as they swap strokes and comments while creating an oil painting of the historic home and grounds.  Expect some lively banter!

Martha Carpenter is a noted portrait artist with studios in Tuscumbia and St. Simon’s Island, GA.  Tim Stevenson, Florence, is known for landscapes and very detailed still life paintings, once focusing on antique Oriental rugs for his studies in perspective.  Both artists conduct workshops and have a following of students and artist peers.

Artists of all skill levels are welcome and must register in advance for the day-long event at a cost of $30 per participant.  Sack lunches catered by Aunt Bea’s Bakery will be provided.  Dine in the courtyard at Belle Mont, before taking to the field for an afternoon of Plein Aire painting (a French term for painting in the open air).

Afternoon visitors to Belle Mont will have the added pleasure of seeing the artists at work across the lawn. In case of inclement weather, artists will paint indoors and should bring a drop cloth.

The highlight of the afternoon will be a reception in the courtyard. The public is invited to see the artists’ work on display. A $10 admission to the reception will include a “Wet Paint” Sale in which selected works created during the day will be available for purchase.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the ongoing restoration and operation of Belle Mont.
