THE SHOALS-The Northwest Alabama Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council gave $1,500.00 to the Lauderdale County Farmers Federation for their Barn Quilts project. The grant covered the costs of supplies for the making and hanging of the barn quilts including plywood, paint/brushes, mounting materials, etc.
Regina Painter is working to hang barn quilts around Lauderdale County as part of the Alabama Quilt Trail. The Alabama Quilt Trail’s purpose is to attract tourists to celebrate agricultural experiences across Alabama. This project also promotes talents and expression associated with art. The Alabama Quilt Trail will promote historical architecture such as barns and other structures still standing. In addition, this project will promote economic development as it is promoting tourism and marketing local farms and businesses. Northwest Alabama RC&D Council Executive Director Charlie Meek supports this project because of how popular these trails have been across the nation. The Council also expressed their appreciation to Senators Larry Stutts and Tim Melson as well as Representatives Johnny Mack Morrow, Marcel Black, Lynn Greer, and Phillip Pettus who represent Lauderdale County well and provide support for the RC&D in the state legislature.
