Yvonne Hammond Newman Meigs, age 86, of Huntsville, died Saturday, April 1, 2017 after a long illness. Born in Birmingham, Mrs. Meigs was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Lucian Newman, Sr. of Dadeville. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Newman.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Meigs of Huntsville; three daughters, Janet Neeley, Julie (John) Malone and Jeanne (Randy) Phillips, and one son, John (Amy) Meigs, all of Huntsville; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Lucian Newman, Jr. of Gadsden and a sister, Joy Bunn of Houston, Texas.
Mrs. Meigs graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Dietetics. She was the longtime Chief Dietician at Huntsville Hospital, Humana and Medical Center hospitals. Mrs. Meigs was very active in the community as a volunteer for Panoply, Blossomwood Elementary and the Girl Scouts. She was a member of Huntsville First United Methodist Church.
Visitation with the family is Monday, April 3 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, April 4 at 11 a.m. in the main sanctuary of Huntsville FUMC with Dr. Glenn Conner and the Rev. Coy Hallmark officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to Huntsville First United Methodist Church or the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
