FLORENCE-Artistic Renderings of Youth, a juried exhibit of work by 7th through 12th grade artists from Colbert, Franklin, and Lauderdale counties, will be on display at Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts in Florence from April 4th through May 9th, 2022. The exhibit, founded by Florence art educator Jerry Foster, is celebrating its 31st year. The Opening Reception will be held at the Art Center on Thursday, April 7th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

This exhibit provides an opportunity for the community to discover young artistic talent in our area. The competition is coordinated by Middle school and High school art teachers to give students the opportunity to exhibit their artwork and receive recognition for their talent. This year artwork representing 19 different schools will be on display. Ribbons are awarded in three grade divisions: Division

Art teacher, or individually. Students may enter up to 3 original pieces, 3-dimensional or 2-dimensional, in any medium. This year AROY is including Illustration as a juried category eligible for a ribbon award in addition to the following categories: 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, Photography, and Computer-generated art. Illustration art has been the focus of our programs and workshops at Kennedy-Douglass for the past three months as we have partnered with the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library to host the Childhood Classics Children’s Book Illustration exhibit. We received grant funds from the Alabama State Council on the Arts for related programs and included an Illustration exhibit at AROY as one of our intended community engagement and education programs. We will have a dedicated Illustration exhibit area within the AROY exhibit highlighting this category of art.

Art students that would like to submit their artwork independently should call the Art Center at (256)760-6379 to get more details on artwork requirements. Artwork can be dropped off at the Art Center through Tuesday, April 29th.
