FLORENCE-Mayor Steve Holt and Danny Pettus, Lauderdale County Commission Chairman, are excited to announce the Florence-Lauderdale Animal Services Grand Opening Celebration will be Monday, May 13, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at 3240 Roberson Road in the Florence-Lauderdale Industrial Park.
The new facility for Florence-Lauderdale Animal Services (FLAS) has been a top priority, and we are excited to open it to the public and our furry friends. This effort began in 2012, and is the accomplishment of many dedicated people including members of the Florence City Council, Lauderdale County Commission, an ad hoc steering committee, Architect Jill Andrews, Craig Construction LLC, FLAS Director Cheryl Jones and staff, city department leaders, and many dedicated volunteers. The completion of this three-million-dollar project includes a 12,700 square foot building with many needed improvements including a dishwasher, suitable ventilation systems, isolation areas, an outside play area, and indoor/outdoor kennels. The facility can hold up to 300 animals comfortably. Funding for this project was made possible through a partnership between the City of Florence and the Lauderdale County Commission. Mayor Steve Holt, “After visiting many shelters and meeting with Mindy Gilbert, the State Humane Society Director, we accomplished the task of building an affordable, cost-effective facility, with efficiency, functionality, and durability. We are confident that this building will serve our community well into the future. Education about neutering and spaying programs is the key to managing populations. We look forward to seeing you at the Grand Opening Celebration.”
