COL William Wayde Benson, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully on October 14, 2024, in Huntsville, Alabama. Born on November 26, 1943, in New Hebron, Mississippi, Wayde grew up instilled with values of kindness and duty that would define his life.
A graduate of New Hebron High School in 1961, Wayde pursued his education earnestly, earning his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi followed by a Master’s Degree from Ole Miss. His thirst for knowledge was matched only by his unwavering commitment to service.
Wayde’s military career spanned 25 years in the United States Marine Corps, where he rose to the rank of Colonel. He notably served in the Vietnam War, a testament to his bravery and dedication to his country. His proudest accomplishments were not only the honors he received but the impact he made on the lives of those he served alongside. After retiring in 1990, his legacy of leadership and commitment continued to inspire those around him.
Beyond his military achievements, Wayde was known for his remarkable talents and interests. A gifted piano player, he found joy in sharing music with family and friends. His hobbies included reading and staying active through exercise, reflecting his zest for life and learning. One of the kindest souls you would ever meet, he was always willing to go above and beyond to help anyone in need, especially his family. His humility and selflessness were unmatched.
Wayde cherished every moment spent with his family. He leaves behind his dear wife, Stephanie Benson; son, Preston Benson; and grandchildren, Emily, Julia, and Samuel Benson, who were the lights of his life. The warmth of his loving spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Francis Pearl Benson and Mary Pearl Benson, whose memories he carried with him throughout his life.
