Joe was a veteran of the Alabama Army National Guard, serving for thirty-eight years. He was a graduate of Deshler High School and a member of First Southern Baptist Church. Joe was a diehard Alabama Crimson Tide fan and an avid Nascar fan. He was also very active in his community. After retiring from insurance as a salesman, he worked for Long Lewis Ford as a shuttle driver and started a retiree breakfast for the 115th Signal Battalion. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Ford E. and Bessie Alexander McCorkle; Barbara E. McCorkle, the mother of his children; son, Chris McCorkle; brother, Steve McCorkle; and brothers-in-law, John Smelley and Richard Sharp.
Joe is survived by his wife, Marie McCorkle; daughter, Jo’el McCorkle Steger (Andy); stepsons, Michael Montgomery (Meg) and Doug Montgomery (Lori); brother, Dalton E. McCorkle (Renee); sisters, Kaye Smelley and Phyllis Sharp; granddaughter, Rebecca M. Wasson; step-grandchildren, Zoe Montgomery, Max Montgomery, Luke Montgomery (Holly), Landon Montgomery, and Savannah Boyd (Tanner); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Zach Wynn, Jeff Wynn, Kyle Bragwell, Tom Sartain, Trey Martin, and Jimmy Black. Honorary pallbearers will be Jose “Pepe” Ruiz, Randy Ozbirn, David Childers, Donnie Claunch, Wesley Willis, and Roger Presley.
