With heavy hearts, yet steadfast hope, we celebrate the life of William “Howard” Oglesby, who entered his eternal home in heaven on February 26, 2025. Howard was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and faithful servant of the Lord. Though our hearts ache in his absence, we find comfort in knowing that he is now in the presence of his Savior.
Born on November 4, 1950, Howard was a proud graduate of the University of Alabama and built a long and respected career in the insurance industry, dedicating 27 years of service to State Farm before his retirement in 2005. While his professional success was notable, it was his love for God, his family, and his community that truly defined him.
Howard was first ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Bessemer, marking the beginning of a lifetime of service. In 1985, he and his beloved wife, Libby, moved to Florence, Alabama, where they became active members of Highland Baptist Church, serving as Sunday School teachers, choir members, and in many other roles. Howard’s career advancement took them to Birmingham in 1996, but in 2010, they returned to Killen, Alabama, reigniting their commitment to Highland Baptist Church, where they remained dedicated and faithful members.
Howard’s heart for service touched countless lives. Whether it was welcoming youth into their home for summers filled with laughter and swimming, mentoring young couples in the church, or simply offering a kind word and steady guidance, Howard had a way of making everyone feel valued and loved. His legacy of faith, kindness, and generosity will continue through those he leaves behind: his loving wife, Libby Oglesby; his sons, Brad Oglesby and Matthew Oglesby; his daughters-in-law, Jennifer Oglesby and Sarah Oglesby; and his cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan, Nolan, Natalie, Anna Kate, Caroline, and Maddie Layne.
Though we grieve the loss of creating new memories with him, we rejoice in the promise that Howard is now in the presence of his Lord, where we will one day be reunited. His life was a testament to his faith, his love, and his unwavering commitment to his family and church. We celebrate his journey home and give thanks for the precious time we were blessed to share with him.
Visitation will be Monday, March 3, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Highland Baptist Church. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Highland Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the Oglesby family would request you show your love by supporting one of Howard’s favorite charities “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” by visiting www.shpbeds.org. This organization provides beds for kids who have no beds with a mission that no kids sleep on the floor.
