William Harvey Boshart of New Hope, Alabama, died on Friday, December 15, 2023, at the age of 103. He was the youngest and last surviving child of James Milton Boshart and Nellie Jane Moore Boshart.
Uncle Harvey, as he was known to all, was born on September 24, 1920. He grew up on the family farm in Woodville. On October 31, 1941, he married the love of his life, Nina Roberta Hodges.
He served honorably in the United States Navy during the Second World War. Stationed primarily in the South Pacific, he served on the USS Menard, an attack transport vessel, preparing for the invasion of Japan. He was on an aircraft carrier in the Philippines when the war ended. For his service he received military decorations including the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and the Victory Medal.
Returning to North Alabama after the war, he farmed and then began a career as a civil servant on Redstone Arsenal, where he worked until his retirement.
Uncle Harvey was independent, living alone and occasionally still driving –safely and carefully – after his 100th birthday. He enjoyed the company of friends and family, including three very special nieces who provided care for him in his final months: Juanita Faye Irvin, Wynola Kirkland and Jenia Keller.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nina, and his siblings, Eadie Myrtle Boshart Hollis, Green Sanford Boshart, Laura Leona Boshart Patterson, Lettie Carrie Boshart Elkins, Nettie Clara Boshart and Ira Wilburn Boshart. He was loved by, and will be missed by, a host of relatives and friends.
His family will receive visitors at the New Hope Funeral Home, 2500 Oak Grove Road, New Hope, Alabama, beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at the Hayden Cemetery in New Hope.
