William “Billy” Randolph Melson, a cherished son, brother, and friend, passed away on April 9, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on July 28, 1944, in Jackson, Tennessee, Billy’s life was one marked by deep roots and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
A third-generation railroad employee, Billy spent approximately forty years of his life as a switchman for Canadian National Illinois Central. His commitment to his career mirrored the steadfastness he exhibited throughout his life, always moving forward while honoring the past.
An alumnus of Northside High School, graduating in 1962, Billy was actively engaged in sports during his younger years, playing both basketball and baseball. His spirit of camaraderie extended beyond sports; he was a member of the Tennessee Army National Guard, serving for six years. This blend of discipline and play built the foundation of the caring and kind man he became, one who consistently visited his family throughout the years.
Over the course of his life, Billy made Memphis his home for more than fifty years, forming lifelong friendships. He had a passion being out on the water, fishing the rivers and lakes of Tennessee and Arkansas. Also, he followed numerous sports particularly SEC football.
Billy was not only defined by his professional accomplishments but also by his enduring bond for family and farmstead. He enjoyed his family farm, a place he held dear, relishing numerous visits where he would work on various projects. The farm was more than just land; it was a place of memories, laughter, and kinship.
Left to treasure his memory is his sister, Evelyn Montgomery (Jerry) of New Port Richie, FL; niece, Lisa Byrum; nephews, Robert West and Reece Byrum. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Randolph Melson and Martha Wood Melson; and brothers, Carl Wood Melson and Joe Melson.
A memorial service to celebrate Billy’s life will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2025, in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors. The interment will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens.
