Mr. William “Bill” Russell Dial, age 89, a resident of Zion Road in Columbia, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at his residence.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Roberts officiating. Following the service, he will be laid to rest in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, from 4 :00 – 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on October 18, 1933, in Columbia, Tennessee, Daddy Bill, as he was affectionately known by many, was the son of the late Wallace Houston Dial and the late Gladys Gray Dial. He proudly served in the United States Army for thirty-six years before his well-earned retirement. Bill was an active member of the American Legion Post 19 for many years. On December 26, 1952, he married Virginia Ellen Dial who preceded him in death on May 1, 2019. Together, they found joy in traveling to the mountains and casinos. Bill had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and dedicated himself to helping others. Most of all, he cherished his family and the time spent with his children and grandchildren. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his son, Terry (Yolanda) Dial of Columbia, daughter, Gail Sanders of Columbia, sisters, Lorene (Rick) Young of Columbia, Virginia Ross (Jerry) Nichols of Columbia, Katie Sue Dial of Columbia, grandchildren, Jason (Saranda) Sanders, Hollie Sanders, Callaway (Ashley) Dial, Russell (Samantha) Dial, and great grandchildren, Austin (Katie) Sanders, Brenon Sanders, Brely Sanders, Abby Sanders, Witney Dial, Brooks Dial, Matthew Dial, Wyatt Dial, Endsley Dial, and Haydyn Dial.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Bobby Dial, Betty Doris Nelson, Joy Wilkinson, Polly Nichols, Pat Derryberry, and son in law, Phil Sanders.
Pallbearers will be Russell Dial, Callaway Dial, Austin Sanders, Brenon Sanders, Jason Sanders, and David Nichols. Honorary pallbearers will include Jimmy and Joyce Callahan, Tommy Nicholson, Donald Wilkinson, and members of the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.
