William (Bill) E. Montgomery, III, 56, of Anniston, formerly of Roanoke, AL, died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, December 23rd. Bill was born in Greenville, AL on October 7, 1964 to Anne Rainer Montgomery and William (Bill) E. Montgomery, Jr. Bill began his education at UMS Wright School for Boys in Mobile. The family moved to Roanoke in 1972 where he lived throughout the remainder of his school years. Bill graduated from Handley High School in Roanoke in 1983 where he was most notably Senior Class President, Boys’ State Representative, Key Club President and captain of the varsity football team. His senior year he was named to the All County, All Area, and All State football teams as an Offensive Lineman.
After high school, Bill attended Auburn University and graduated from Jacksonville State University with a BS in Human Resources Management. Bill proudly spent his entire career at Superior Gas which was founded by his maternal grandfather in 1948 and remains a family-owned business. Bill learned the business from the ground up spending high school summers working in the shop as an entry level employee and most recently serving as the company’s Vice President and General Manager. Over the numerous years in the propane industry, Bill actively served on various Alabama Propane Gas Association (APGA) committees as well as serving as District Director, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and ultimately President of APGA in 2012-2013. Bill was a member of the governor appointed Alabama Liquefied Petroleum Gas Board from October 2013 until present and served as both Vice-Chairman and Chairman during his tenure.
Bill was a simple man believing strongly in God, family and country. He dearly loved the time he spent watching his boys play sports and actively volunteering on the sidelines at The Donoho School, hunting and fishing. He cherished his time with friends and family at the lake and the beach and was an avid Auburn football and basketball fan.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lisa Taylor Montgomery of Anniston, two sons William (Will) E. Montgomery, IV (Allie) of Tuscaloosa and James Walton Montgomery of Anniston, his parents Anne Rainer Montgomery and William (Bill) E. Montgomery, Jr., mother-in-law Mary Taylor, all of Roanoke, AL, sister Rainer Montgomery (Jason), maternal aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. James Walton Rainer, Jr. (Anne) all of Birmingham, AL, paternal aunt Virginia Montgomery Stallings of Excelsior Springs, MO, paternal uncle Richard Johnson of Tulsa, Ok, and a host of special family members, co-workers and friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Rod Taylor, his nephew Reid McDaniel, paternal grandparents Helen and William E. Montgomery of Greenville, AL, maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. James Walton Rainer (Ida Wright Jones), and paternal aunt Shirley Jean Montgomery Johnson of Tulsa, OK.
We will remember Bill with a Memorial Service at Golden Springs Baptist Church in Anniston, AL on Tuesday, December 29th. Visitation will be in the Family Life Center from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. with the memorial service in the church to immediately follow. We will respectfully observe Covid protocols including limited capacity, social distancing and face coverings.
