ALONG THE MUSCLE SHOALS OF THE TENNESSEE RIVER – This upcoming week will see something very special along the shores of Lakes Wilson and Pickwick. Beginning today, Saturday, Chad Pregracke, his wife Tammy Becker, and a crew of volunteers, clad in work clothes and gloves, will leave their barge… They will take to the waters in outboards and fan out, looking for garbage along the shoreline. When they find it, they will collect the flotsam and take it to the mother ship for processing.

Their mission is to raise awareness of the importance of the river, and the delicate nature of its ecology.

The day started early at Florence-Lauderdale Headquarters. Mayors Mickey Haddock of florence, and Billy Shoemaker of Tuscumbia were on hand to present Captain Pregracke with Keys to the four Shoals Cities, and to read aloud a proclamation of welcome and congratulations from the four Mayors.

The week-long mission will involve dozens of people from all over the area who will be helping in the cleanup campaign, as well as educational lectures by local experts on the ecology and history of the Tennessee River.
