Waylon Franklin Mitchell, of Florence, Alabama, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025, in Huntsville, Alabama.

Born in Lexington, Alabama, Waylon grew up in Lauderdale County. After graduating high school, he honorably served his country in the United States Navy on an Aircraft Carrier in Jacksonville, FL from September 25, 1956, to January 1958

A devoted member of Edgemont United Methodist Church in Florence, Waylon lived his life as a reflection of his faith. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend-always leading with kindness, integrity, and a deep love for his family. His greatest joys were the moments spent with his loved ones, and he will be remembered for his unwavering devotion and gentle spirit.

Waylon was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Benton Mitchell and Oma Mae Pettus; his sisters, Rachel Mitchell, Girchen Mitchell, and Agnes Mitchell; his brothers, Fisher Mitchell, and James Mitchell; and his beloved wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Betty) C. Mitchell.
He is survived by his children, Angela M. Thompson (Dan) of Huntsville, AL, and Thomas W.
Mitchell (Lisa) of Huntsville, AL; his grandchildren, Nathan Thompson, Natalie Thompson, Nicolas Thompson, Nathan Frazier (Sylvia), Isaac Mitchell, and Elisabeth Mitchell; his great-grandson; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the many people who helped care for Waylon in the latter part of his life. A special thanks to Jackie and Jason Fields for all that they did for Waylon.

A celebration of Waylon’s life will be held at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens on Monday, March 24th beginning at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to charity or organization of choice, such as Edgemont United Methodist Church or a veterans charity!
