Mrs. Wanda Byess, age 89, of Morgan City community of Union Grove, Alabama passed away at her residence on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. Wanda was born January 22, 1934 and enjoyed a good long life in Morgan County. Her parents were Henry William (H.W.) Brooks and Myrtle Eva Pritchett Brooks. She married her husband, Tex Byess (DOD 4/26/2017) in October of 1955; a beautiful relationship lasting 62 years. Wanda attended church services at The Rock Family Worship Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
Wanda and Tex were entrepreneurs in their local community. They owned and operated several businesses throughout their careers including; Tex’s City Service Gas Station, Café in Morgan City, and until recently the Morgan City Feed and Seed. Wanda was known as a great seamstress and enjoyed her times perfecting her skills. She was also recognized as a great gardener. Her interesting career also included employment (31 years) with H.R. Block. Wanda was the matriarch of the family, the glue that held them together. She loved everyone and everyone loved her. She loved those times when the house was full of people and enjoyed Sunday dinners with lots and lots of laughter. In Wanda’s early years she enjoyed spending time at the lake and attending Alabama football games but in her later years she enjoyed her visits and friends at the Senior Center. The family will miss her cooking skills especially her green beans, biscuits and strawberry bucket cake. Wanda enjoyed life and lived it to its fullest. She prayed Numbers 6:24-26 over her family for many years. “Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” The tradition will continue. She will be missed by all.
Family members left to cherish their memories include: daughter, Carol Bondeson; grandchildren, Josh Bondeson and Shanda Kent (Robin); great grandchildren, Jon Greer, Brooke Kent and Bella Kent; Great great grandchildren, Addison Greer and Brantley Greer; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding Wanda in death include: husband, Tex Byess; parents, Henry and Myrtle Brooks; son-in-law, Vernon Bondeson; sister and brother-in-law, Daphine Light and Elvin Light.
A visitation for Mrs. Byess will be at Brindlee Mountain Chapel in Morgan City on Saturday, May 27, 2023 between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The funeral service will immediately follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. Brothers Eldridge Criscoe, David Nelson and Rusty Nelson will be officiating. Interment will be in the Union Grove Cemetery, Lacey’s Spring, AL. Pallbearers will be Randy Byess, Tex Byess, Jason Strom, Kenneth Barker, Robert Barker and Pete Lewter. Honorary pallbearers are David Byess and Dean Byess.
