Walter S. Hilburn, 84 of Union Grove passed away Saturday, November 11, 2023, at his home. Mr. Hilburn was born August 7, 1939 in Piedmont, Alabama, the son of Lomar and Isma B. Green Hilburn. He was a retired Iron Worker. He served with Honor and Courage in the United States Army and was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post 243. He was an avid Alabama football fan, enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves, softball, fishing, frog gigging and spending time with his grand babies.
He is survived by children: Tony Hilburn (Shelly), Jeff Hilburn (Michelle), Pam Fortner (Kris) and Steve Gaddis (Audrey); seven grandchildren: Starla, Rachel, David, Jimmy, Carrie, Zach, Kiley, Amy, Josh and Samantha; seven great grandchildren: Brooklynn, Carlie, Hannah, Tanner, Ryan, Marshall, Alyssa, Kendall and Ella Mae and a great, great grandchild: Nolan; a sister: Betty Hodgin (Bill); niece and nephew: Daphne and Shad; and a host of other relatives and many dear friends and neighbors; preceded in death by his wife: Mattie Hilburn (July 14, 2022), a grandson: Sean and a great grandson: Dylan
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday November 14, 2023 at Gober Funeral Chapel, Brother Jimmy Smith and Brother Gary Harvell, officiating. The burial will be in Oleander Cemetery, Gober Funeral Chapel, directing.
Pallbearers: Ryan Allen, Kiley Fortner, Hannah Gaddis, Tanner Hampton, Shad Hodgin and Kenny Scroggin. Honorary Pallbearer: Nolan Barber
Mr. Hilburn’s family will receive friends during visitation at Gober Funeral Chapel on Monday November 13, 2023 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
