Virginia Ruth Jones Mitchell McCalmon, 89, of Belgreen, Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at her residence.
Virginia was born on January 29, 1934, in Franklin County to James and Roena (Hester) Jones. She lived most of her life in Franklin County and was a faithful member of James Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker for many years.
She was a loving and devoted wife to her husband, Gene, for 26 years. She was also a loving wife to her first husband and father of their children, Benjamin Mitchell, for 33 years.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, James and Roena Jones; first husband, Bejamin Mitchell; daughter, Rita Mitchell Hargett; brother, Billy Jones; and sister-in-law Belva Jones.
Survivors include her husband, Gene McCalmon, of Belgreen, AL; son, Byron Mitchell (Ann), of Belgreen, AL; son-in-law, Randy Hargett (Sherry), of Belgreen, AL; grandson, D. Brent Hargett (Kristin), of Pensacola, FL; granddaughter, Kelli Hargett Higgins (Craig), of Hoover, AL; granddaughter, Heather Mitchell Sharp (Heath), of Belgreen, AL; great-grandchildren, Meredith and Garrett Hargett, Ben and Maggie Higgins, and Hollie and Hallie Sharp; nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Spry Memorial Chapel in Russellville, AL. Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon in the funeral home chapel with Brother Kenneth Bond and Brother Steve Lindsey officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenhill-Ezzell Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Brent Hargett, Craig Higgins, Heath Sharp, Johnny Jones, Tommy Paul Jones, and Jerry McDonald. The honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Jones and Stewart Blackburn.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Aveanna Hospice, CenterWell Healthcare, Kayla Humphries CRNP and the staff at Bay Health and Wellness, and her compassionate caregivers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Greenhill-Ezzell Cemetery Fund. Spry Memorial Chapel assisted the family.
