Mrs. Virginia Lee Johnson Virginia Lee Whisenant Johnson, 81, of Guntersville, AL, passed away peacefully at home on March 25, 2025.

Born on December 20, 1943, Virginia dedicated her life to education and community service. She taught at White Plains Elementary School for 27 years, profoundly impacting many young lives with her kindness and dedication. Additionally, Virginia served on the Piedmont City Council, contributing significantly to the community.

A devout Christian, Virginia was actively involved in her faith community. She served and taught Sunday School at the First Baptist Church of Piedmont, The Church at Lake Guntersville, and The First Baptist Church of Guntersville, where her teachings and services left a lasting impression on many.

Virginia’s passion for Alabama Football was unmatched. She and her husband, Smitty, traveled extensively to support the Crimson Tide, celebrating each game with joy and enthusiasm.

Virginia is survived by her husband of 66 years, Smitty; children, Earl Johnson (Connie), Rod Johnson (Christi), Renee Van Slyke (Jeff); grandchildren, Jessica Cox (Daniel), Matt Van Slyke, Jay Van Slyke (Savannah), Andrew Johnson (Micaela), Nick Johnson, Eli Johnson, Emily Johnson, and Savannah Johnson, and her sister Aline Cutchens (Charles ). She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jenny Dale Johnson, and her parents, Herschel and Novella Whisenant.

The family wishes to thank her caregivers; Joyce, Courtney, Shaina and Baelie for their comfort and support.

Visitation will be at 11:00 am on Friday, March 28 at Guntersville Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 1:00pm, officiated by Pastor Randy Evers. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or a donation in her name to Point of Grace Church in Guntersville.

Virginia’s life was a testament to her unwavering love for Christ, her commitment to education, and her deep love for her family and community. Her gentle spirit and warm heart will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
