Virginia “Jennie” Powers Thomas – Obituary

Virginia “Jennie” Powers Thomas, age 84, passed away on October 1, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Henry Thomas, sons John Mark Thomas and Jerry Martin Thomas; parents Veda and Manker Powers; sister Faye McMillian; and granddaughter Sarah Crews.

She is survived by sons Lewis Thomas (Donna), and Nathan Thomas (Dana); daughters June Myrick, Mary Beth Davis (Tony), and Becky Baggett (Phillip); daughter-in-law Susan Thomas; fifteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; brother Harold Powers (Ozelle) and sister Carolyn P. Anderson (Richard).

Virginia was born on November 17, 1931 and was raised in Athens, TN. She was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens and U. T. Nursing School in Memphis, TN, where she met her husband. Dr. and Mrs. Thomas lived for many years in Shreveport, LA and later moved to Dr. Thomas’ hometown of Lawrenceburg, TN.

She was very active in the First Baptist Church of Lawrenceburg where she taught and served in many areas. She was known for her love for God and His word, and taught in Backyard Bible Clubs, VBS, ladies fellowships and other areas where she had the opportunity. She loved Christ and impacted her family and community for God’s glory. In recent years, she was a resident of Brentwood Retirement Community and a member of Grace Life Church of the Shoals in Muscle Shoals, AL. The family would like to thank her caregivers, Brentwood Retirement Community, Mitchell-Hollingsworth and Amedisys Hospice for their love and support.

Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The visitation and home-going service for Virginia Thomas will be on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at Neal Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg, TN. The visitation will be from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, with the service beginning at 2:00 pm. Dr. Jeff Noblit will officiate. Interment will be in Mimosa Cemetery in Lawrenceburg, TN. Pallbearers will be grandsons Caleb Thomas, Rob Thomas, Seth Crews, Eric Crews, John Baggett, and James Baggett.

Her desire to be in heaven with her Lord, which she expressed often in recent years, is now a reality and we rejoice in her victory.
