Virgil Eugene McCubbins, 58, of Decatur, passed away Thursday, May 9th, 2024, at River City Nursing Home. He was born March 14th, 1966, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Virge and Ellen (Mracle) McCubbins.
Mr. McCubbins is survived by his son Bradley McCubbins; daughter Lyla Jade; brothers Ronnie McCubbins, Charles McCubbins (Diane), and Michael McCubbins; and nephews Bobby McCubbins, Jimmy McCubbins (Ria), James Anthony Couey, and Michael “Chase” McCubbins.
Gene, he was one of the coolest people I’ve ever met and anyone who knew him knows, if he was your friend, then you had a good friend. He was father of Bradley Taylor McCubbins, and Lyla Jade McCubbins. He was a good person, who love GOD, and loved people. A guy who preached love with a smile. You will be greatly missed. This isn’t a goodbye, just see ya later.
His hobbies included Team Roping with his son, riding motorcycles, and enjoyed flying up and down the halls in the nursing home on his electric scooter. He liked listening to Rock-N-Roll, playing his ukulele when he lived on the river at Lucy’s Branch. “Eugene” played all types of sports as a kid, and throughout high school. He grew up in Athens, AL, and went to Athens High School. He loved being on the water, and water sports from the time he was young until he was old. He loved working and traveling all over the United States on the Rodeo Circuit. He worked with the Ken Tredway Company, and others. He enjoyed working giving trail rides at Five Oaks, when he lived in Gatlinburg, TN. As a young man he worked construction for several different companies, including Martin and Cobey. Later in life, he owned his own dump truck that he loved driving. He worked horseshoeing.
He loved his family and took pride in the McCubbins name. He loved his friends. Gene was a cut up and loved to make people laugh, or smile. As a small child he was a member at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Athens, AL. Then later as a young man he enjoyed going to West Highland Baptist Church in Athens, AL. He had lots of friends there and enjoyed the fellowship and outings. He played basketball in his late 20’s with the church. At the age of 23 yrs. old Gene decided to accept Christ into his life and he was baptized. When on the road he attended the Cowboy Church. As he grew older, he loved going to the Church of Christ with friends in Athens. Gene passed from a decline of health after hitting a deer on a motorcycle- doing a buck sixty mph. Almost immediately after, Gene went into several different hospitals, and two different nursing homes. Since 2016, Gene has lived at Riverside, and last at River City Center, both in Decatur, AL.
As Gene would say, “It’s not goodbye, it’s just see ya later.”
There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 18th, 2024, sat 10:00am at Lindsey Lane Baptist Church’s Student Center.
