MUSCLE SHOALS-Pilots from as far as Colorado and Nebraska are headed to the Shoals in vintage airplanes for the Shoals Warbird Weekend June 13-15.
The aircraft will include P-51 Mustangs and other planes used during World War II and the Korean War. BJ Kennamore of Muscle Shoals, an organizer of the event, expects 40 to 50 pilots to participate.
“It all depends on the weather. A lot of these planes are not designed to be flown in bad weather,” Kennamore said. “We have pilots from all over the country who have indicated they are coming if the weather is not bad between where they are coming from and here.”
The pilots will begin arriving Friday, June 13. They will spend Saturday, June 15 doing flyovers around the Northwest Alabama Regional Airport and nearby neighborhoods. The pilots will begin departing the Shoals on Sunday, June 15.
The prime time for viewing the aircraft will be during the numerous flyovers from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, Kennamore said.
The best place to watch the flyovers is the Airport Complex baseball fields, 601 Webster St., Muscle Shoals, adjacent to the airport, Kennamore said. “There’s plenty of room for parking and for watching the flyovers at the baseball fields. Space for spectators at the airport is very limited.” Admission is free.
The aircraft will be flying in formation in groups of four to more than 20 planes. Kennamore will be flying his 1972 Nanchang CJ-6, which was designed and built in China.
The pilots travel around the country at their own expense to help share their love of vintage military airplanes with the public.
Kennemore and the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 615 of the Shoals are hosts of the fly-in event. Sponsors include Long-Lewis Ford of the Shoals, Ladd Gardner Aviation Insurance and CB&S Bank.
