Dr. Victoria “Vicki” L. Joiner was born on January 18,1965 in Birmingham, Alabama to Elder Murray E. Joiner, Sr. and Nannie B. Hammonds Joiner. She passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024 surrounded by her family and friends.
We honor our sister, mother, friend, cousin, and colleague. To know Victoria was to know that you had a true friend. She embraced this life with love, laughter, song and a love of ministry.
She graduated from Oakwood University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 1987 and completed her Masters of Rhetorical Communication from Regent University in 2002. She earned a Doctor of Educational Leadership and Change from Fielding Graduate University in 2011.
Victoria became the General Manager of Oakwood College radio station WOCG in 1989. Under her leadership, the station increased its listenership, moved into new facilities in the spring of 2005, began streaming online, held its first remote broadcast, and influenced hundreds of students in the communications and radio ministry. She also hosted the program “Sabbath Praise” on WOCG (now WJOU) for over 20 years.
Dr. Joiner’s influence was also felt in the classroom and other areas of leadership. She served as an Assistant Vice President of Advancement & Development, Director of Alumni Relations, Professor of Communications at Oakwood University, and the first Director of the Oakwood University Memorial Gardens Cemetery. She was also an adjunct professor at Alabama A&M University, Drake State Technical College and was Associate Professor of Communication at Southern Adventist University.
Dr. Victoria L. Joiner was preceded in death by her parents Murray and Nannie Joiner and her niece Lauren Alexandra Joiner. She leaves to cherish her memory, her children Jennifer Christine Miller and David Lee Miller. Her sister Nanetta Joiner Pressley, and brother Dr. Murray E. Joiner, Jr.; her niece, Dr. Joyce L. Bellamy, and nephews Robert L. Pressley, Murray E. Joiner III; four great nieces and nephews, Mia Lynn Bellamy, Michael Leon Bellamy, Jr.; Nori Laine Pressley, and Lennox Kash Pressley.
Dr. Joiner’s Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at the First Seventh Day Adventist Church at 3:00 pm, 1303 Evangel Drive, Huntsville, AL. She will be interned at the Oakwood University Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
There will be no public viewing.
