Vertie Hale Word – Obituary

Vertie Hale Word, age 91, passes away Sunday, December 24, 2017. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 28, from noon until 2:00 p.m. at Colbert Memorial Chapel. The funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Mike Brooks and Ben Hayes officiating. The burial will be in Colbert Memorial Gardens.

Vertie was a longtime member of Highland Park Church of Christ where she was deeply loved. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Herbert Eady; her daughter, Vonda Shockley; her parents, John Harley Hale and Bertha Clark Hale; and her brothers, Verdis Hale, R.H. Hale, and Gaither Hale (infant).

She is survived by her daughter, Belva McGee (Don); son, Max Eady (Frankie); son-in-law, Paul Shockley. Jr.; brothers, Doug Hale (Betty) and Glovis Hale (Barbara); sister, Jane Hale; six grandchildren: Amy Tidwell (Brian), Alan Watkins (Sara), Chris Shockley (Melanie), Tara Mitchell (Michael), Mark Eady, and Chad Shockley; eleven great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Alan Watkins, Chris Shockley, Chad Shockley, Mark Eady, Michael Mitchell, Brian Tidwell, and Glen Grubbs. Honorary pallbearers will be the elders and deacons of Highland Park Church of Christ.

The family extends special thanks to Dr. Lynn Ridgeway, Morningside Assisted Living, Mitchell Hollingsworth Rehab, and Hospice of North Alabama.
