Vernon Leldon Key – Obituary

Vernon Leldon Key passed away on Friday, March 15, 2013, at the age of 86, as a result of a massive stroke. He was born on July 10, 1926, in Hartselle. He married Bernice Adair in 1949. They would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in July. Mr. Key was predeceased by his parents; three sisters; and one brother.

He leaves behind his wife, Bernice Key; one son, Gerald Key (Bev); one daughter, Carol Key; and three grandsons, Ryan Key (Kelly), Chad Key (Christy), and Jared Key. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Colton Key, Lindsey Key, and Madison Key; two nephews; and one niece. Mr. Key was retired from L&N Railroad. He also worked on “the farm” in Moulton, AL., and coached little league baseball at Wahouma Park in the 1960s. Mr. Key served proudly in the Merchant Marines. He loved the outdoors and continued gardening up until his death. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., with the service following at Asheville Road Church of Christ in Leeds, AL. Burial will be at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Montevallo, AL.

The family wishes to thank all of the doctors and nurses at the UAB Stroke Unit, and the Palliative Care Comfort Care Unit for their care and compassion for our dad and family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to the UAB Center for Palliative Care, Room 219, Ch19, 1530, 3rd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35294-2041. Elliotts Brown Funeral Home in Moulton, AL will be directing.
