Vern Cummings, age 93, of Russellville, moved to his heavenly home on Thursday, May 16, 2024, while at North Alabama Medical Center.
Vern was a devout Christian, a faithful member of Gateway Church of God, a praying man, and a devoted man who loved his family. He loved meeting and talking to people, and he always asked if they were a Christian. His greatest desire was for everyone, but especially his family, to be saved. He read his Bible every morning and had read through the complete Bible sixty-six times and each time, he said he would learn something new. He was known for his kindness toward everyone, and Vern touched many lives as he consistently lived out the faith he professed. Even though we will miss our dad, grandfather, brother, and friend, we rejoice that he is now in the presence of his Lord Jesus Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Cummings; sons, Terry Cummings, David Cummings; son-in-law, Johnny B. Smith; grandson, Joshua Cummings; parents, Robert & Ida (Borden) Cummings; siblings, Charles Borden, Bob Cummings, Jerry Cummings, Jack Cummings, Dorothy Borden, Nell Rogers, and Dellie Presley.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughters, Patricia Smith, Charlotte Smallwood (Rodney); grandchildren, Tim Smith (Debbie), Nichole Ergle (Johnathan), Monica Moon (Chris), Brittany Smallwood, Terry Cummings, II (Vicky), Jennifer Ruffing (Robert); great-grandchildren, Hunter Smith, Caitlan Swinney (Chase), Anna Smith, Cara Ergle, Olivia Ergle, Laura Ergle, Phoenix Ergle, Morgan Moon, Ashlee Moon, Maddox Smallwood, Terry Cummings III, Deanna Willhite (Dallas), Joey Magiera, Robby Ruffing, and Justice Ruffing; two great-great-granddaughters, Willow Willhite, Adeline Swinney; sister, Margaret Lovett; and a host of nieces & nephews.
The visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Spry Memorial Chapel. The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Spry Memorial Chapel with Bro. Nick McSpadden officiating the service. The burial will be at Knights of Pythias Cemetery.
The pallbearers will be Chris Moon, Johnathan Ergle, Tim Smith, Hunter Smith, Gary Cummings, and Michael Cummings. The honorary pallbearer will be Maddox Smallwood.
The family would like to thank all of Vern’s doctors, and all of our friends and family for your love and prayers during this time.
