Family and friends mourn the passing of a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend. Verlene Scruggs Tidwell passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 22, 2017. Verlene was very studious and was valedictorian of her high school graduating class, Tishomingo High School Class of 1956. Verlene loved to read, and legend has it that she read every book in the Helen Keller Public Library, as well as anything else she could get her hands on. She loved cooking for the First United Methodist Church of Tuscumbia Shepherd’s Table as a way to reach out to the less fortunate. Verlene was dedicated to her children and grandchildren, and thought only of others, never herself. Verlene was a beautiful lady with a unique sense of style who loved collecting orange purses.

Verlene is survived by her husband of 54 years, Marvin A. Tidwell; sister, Geraldine Scruggs Daniel; son, Marvin A. Tidwell, Jr. and family; daughter, Tracy Tidwell Lloyd-Jones and husband John; granddaughter, Jenna Danielle Tidwell; and grandson, Aidan Ryan Tidwell.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Rachel Tidwell.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, September 26, at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The service will follow at 2:00 p.m., in the funeral home chapel. The Reverend Dr. Rudy Guess will officiate. Interment will be in Colbert Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be John Lloyd-Jones, Larry David Daniel, Eli Aday, Dean Leslie, Jimmy Spain, and Joel Parrish.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Shepherd’s Table, 104 East Third Street, Tuscumbia, AL 35674.
