Vera Ruth Cowley, age 94 of Decherd, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at her residence. She was born on June 27, 1929, in Grundy County, to the late James and Alma Mae (Meeks) Sartain. Vera worked as a seamstress at the Cowan Hat Factory and Lanier Coat Factory. Sewing was not only her occupation but also her hobby, along with gardening and helping on the family farm. Vera never stayed away from home for very long. She enjoyed visiting Sewanee to walk the trails and going for rides to see the beautiful nature. She will always be remembered for her strong will and determination. Vera was a member of the Oak Grove Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by brother, Frank Sartain, who died in Normandy during World War II serving his country; husband, Gene Cowley; son, Douglas Goodman; and granddaughter, Shannon Goodman. Vera is survived by her sons, Randell (Nina) Goodman, Rex (Connie) Cowley; daughter-in-law, Marsha Goodman; grandchildren, Tina (Robert) Goodman Gottesman, Tammy (Tom) Goodman, Stephanie Mitchell, Taylor (Eli) Osgood, Katherine Hartman, James (Brianna) Crick; ten great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Penny Starnes and Saranne Reedy.
