Vennette Charlton passed away on Sunday, June 16 at Magnolia Trace in Huntsville, Alabama. She was 94 years old.
Vennette was born on September 29, 1929 in Birmingham, AL to Carolena and Burny Presswood Cox. Her mother was one of seven siblings and despite losing her father at a young age, Vennette was loved and supported by an extensive and closely knit family. She attended Auburn University and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. At Auburn she met and married the love of her life, John “Jack” Baker Charlton. Together with daughter Carol, they resided in Texas, Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Mexico, UK and Belgium.
Vennette was an avid bridge player, world traveller and loved her church, social and civic involvements. She worshipped and served as a long time member of The Church of the Nativity in Huntsville and as a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Decatur. She was an active member of the Women’s Guild at the Huntsville Museum of Art and served in many Board positions there as well as being a docent. Vennette was President of the Huntsville Pilgrimage Society, Vice President and President of Rotary Ann, a member of the Decatur Service League and Sustainer of the Jr. League of Huntsville.
Vennette is survived by her daughter Carol Hancock and her son in law Gary Hancock in Decatur, granddaughter Noel Stewart of Homewood, grandsons Taylor Stone of Decatur , Eric Stone of Charlotte, great granddaughter Emmy Stewart and great grandsons Charlton Stewart of Birmingham and nieces Suzanne Horne of Dallas and Vennette Rosnick of Gig Harbor, Washington.
A celebration of Vennette’s life will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Decatur on Sunday, June 23 at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be at 1:15 in the church library and a reception follows the service at daughter Carol Hancock’s home .
In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to Hospice of the Valley in Decatur or to Decatur’s Delano Park .
