Mr. Uzoma Peter Lane
February 18, 1983 – June 24, 2024
“Out, out brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage”
― William Shakespeare, Macbeth
Born February 18, 1983 in Washington, DC at the George Washington University Hospital. The eldest son of Reverend Isadore Lane and Patricia Ihuaka Lane. He was considered an “Irish twin” because his younger brother, Kelechi, was born only a year and few months later.
He cherished his role as big brother and took it upon himself to teach both Kelechi and Lilian how to read at the tender age of four years old. He was very protective of his siblings as he walked them to and from school. He always kept a watchful eye and practiced a surreal level of patience with his brother who enjoyed hiding from him to delay the walk back home. Uzoma was an honorable and supportive son and brother. He often played the role of “mom and dad” providing advice, guidance and direction. He also was a strict rule follower and reported all wrong doings immediately. He was an advocate for safe play and personal responsibility.
Growing up, he enjoyed playing basketball, chess, board games, and video games. A strong sense of athleticism runs in the family as their father also enjoyed being active and outdoors. They would go cycling, fishing, etc. Both Uzoma and Kelechi ran track and joined the Saint Francis de Sales Eagles basketball team in middle school.
Academically, Uzoma excelled at an early age, receiving numerous accolades in school. He was offered the opportunity to skip several grades, however, Mrs. Patricia Lane felt it would be best to stay the course and complete school at a more normal pace. During high school, Uzoma refined his talent in writing and discovered a love for literature and poetry. He created and founded, Wise Owl Literary Services, which provided tutoring and assistance with writing essays, speeches, etc.
As a published author and poet, Uzoma was a lover of language and communication. He was an avid reader and embraced every aspect of the literary arts. He loved Shakespeare and viewed him as his role model. He enjoyed singing sea shanties and he even developed his own rhyming scheme.
He attended Howard University as an English major and History minor. He was a member of the chess club and volunteered for several community outreach events. It was also during this time, that he assumed his duties as the Administrative Director for New Community Child Development Center. In this role, he created several handbooks for parents and teachers. He developed training manuals while governing all policies, procedures, and personnel/student records. In later years, he became a freelance writer offering his services as a ghost writer to several published authors. He also served as a home health aide to his ailing father, Reverend Isadore Lane.
Uzoma is survived by two siblings: Mr. Kelechi James Lane (Mrs. Markita Lane) and Ms. Lilian Lane.
“My soul is in the sky.”
