CHATTANOOGA-The recent rains across the Tennessee Valley have reduced, but not eliminated, the danger of wildfires. As a result, the majority of public areas TVA had previously closed for fire danger will be re-opened by the end of the day on Friday, December 9. Exceptions include areas normally closed during the winter and some isolated primitive areas in locations that still have a higher fire risk. Signs and barriers will remain in place in the limited number of closed areas.
Although the fire danger has eased, significant portions of TVA’s service area remain under extreme drought conditions. As a precaution to protect the public, a burn ban will remain in effect on all TVA-managed public lands and recreation areas throughout its seven-state service territory. All open flame sources remain prohibited – including campfires, barbecues, smoking or any other flame producing activity. In addition, visitors are asked to park only on paved or gravel surfaces.
Along with other federal, state and local agencies, we’ll continue to closely monitor conditions and will take additional steps as needed to help ensure the safety of the public.
