Athens-Limestone Civil War Geocache A Technological Adventure in History
Athens-Limestone Alabama is home to a unique tour of Civil War points of interest, battlefields and graves. This adventure also offers a trip through the local Civil War history. It involves computers, government satellites, GPS units and hidden “Tupperware”. Oh – the ability to solve puzzle and sense of adventure on the part of the person or people involved also come into play.
The Civil War Geocaching Adventure is the culmination of what happens when the world of technology and the world of history collide. It was created in 2011 by the Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association to capitalize on this growing trend that has now captured the world’s interest. Adventurers, called geocachers, are traveling not only their own backyards but the world to hunt and find hidden caches (aka hidden “Tupperware”).
What is geocaching?
According to Geocaching.com, geocaching is a “worldwide activity enjoyed by GPS users”. “Seekers” use their GPS to locate a series of hidden “caches” at coordinates specified at geocaching.com by the “hiders”. The “hunt” takes you throughout the community with opportunities to experience different places, people and activities- in this case, Athens-Limestone Civil War history and sites. When “seekers” also known as a “cacher” finds and opens the hidden “cache” you take a trinket and leave a trinket — this keeps the cache full.
What do you need to geocache?
You need a GPS unit (portable because you’ll need to be able to carry it with you), a computer to go to geocaching.com and download the coordinates, trinkets to “trade-in” at the caches and a sense for adventure.
To find caches is easy and free – just log on to www.geocaching.com and check for caches in your area- search by city, state, or zip. Then enter the coordinates into your GPS and go!
