ATHENS-Mayor Ronnie Marks and County Commission Chairman Collin Daly are honoring September as Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month.

Just a few of the events and happenings in and around Athens for the month of September:

Sept. 1: Pep Rally on The Square by Athens High at 3 p.m. on Marion Street, east side; there will be fans, team, band, cheerleaders, etc. Much loved Athens tradition to kick off the first home game of the season.
Sept. 7: Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation’s Crystal Cup golf tournament fundraiser: Canebrake: proceeds will go toward a new state of the art echocardiogram ultrasound machine for the Imaging Dept. Call Caroline Canestrari for info at 256-762-7043
Sept. 9: Travis Manion Foundation 5K starts at 7 a.m. on Market Street on The Square; run honors those impacted by 9/11 and our local responders: https://www.travismanion.org/events/911-heroes-run/2023-athens-al/
Sept. 9: Superhero Day will be at the Duck Pond and include a parade, so activities will be east of Square: event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is held in honor of September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and it honors our communities youngest heroes, those battling the disease: https://www.visitathensal.com/superhero.html
