FLORENCE-Florence-Lauderdale Public Library is kicking off the New Year with several fun events. Check out these upcoming events for January.
Childhood Classics: 100 Years of Children’s Book Illustration
Jan. 2 to March 24
Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts and the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library
This national exhibit from the Art Kandy Collection features more than 140 original works and explores the history of children’s book illustration from pen-and-ink drawings common at the turn of the century, to today’s digital creations. It is one of the most extensive exhibitions on this subject ever organized and is made possible through funding from the Alabama Council on the Arts, the Kennedy-Douglass Trust, and the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library Foundation.
What is illustration? with children’s book author and illustrator Lori Nichols
11 am Saturday, Jan. 8
Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts
(This is an associated program in conjunction with the Childhood Classics exhibition)
Free
Author and illustrator Lori Nichols will discuss how she creates picture books with illustrations and stories. She will go behind the scenes of her process to show how imagination and play can help direct the art to tell a story.
“I work in a variety of mediums depending on the story,” Nichols says on her website, lorinichols.com. “Pencil, pen & ink, collage. Sometimes all at the same time.”
