The Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) has graciously offered two films for viewing in celebration of Earth Day and will lead discussions on each.

“Kiss the Ground” is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 27. Narrated by and featuring Woody Harrelson, the film offers a solution to the climate crisis: regenerate the world’s soils. The regeneration would  stabilize Earth’s climate, restore lost ecosystems and create abundant food supplies.

“Before the Flood,” scheduled for 2-4 p.m. Saturday, April 30, features Leonardo DiCaprio and his team as they travel the globe to witness the effects of climate change and what can be done to stop it.

The Local History and Genealogy Department on the second floor has a valuable, growing collection of African American funeral programs.

The programs have been donated to our collection by Shoals residents. They contain not only the name of the deceased individual and the dates of birth and death, but also contain names of the individual’s family – parents, spouse, children, grandchildren, and, many times, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Other information often include where the individual was born, where they died, and in what city and state family members lived at the time.

This information is crucial to African Americans who are researching their genealogy. Black residents often encounter many roadblocks to tracing their ancestry because of the lack of official records.

We welcome other families who have a collection of funeral programs to add them to our index. A page from the index is seen below.
