FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama will host Dr. Christina Snyder as part of the Lawrence J. Nelson Memorial Speaker Series.

Snyder will speak twice Monday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m., at the Florence Indian Mound Museum with a program titled “The End of ‘Prehistory’: A Historian’s Perspective on America’s Ancient Past;” and again at 6 p.m., at the GUC Performance Center on UNA’s campus, with a presentation titled “Andrew Jackson’s Indian Son: Muscogee Creeks and Americans in the Removal Era.”

Snyder, who currently serves as the Pennsylvania State University McCabe Greer Professor of History, is a historian focusing on colonialism, race and slavery.

Her latest book, Great Crossings: Indians, Settlers, and Slaves in the Age of Jackson, won the Francis Parkman Prize, which is awarded annually by the society of American Historians to a nonfiction work of history that contributes significantly to American History.

The Lawrence J. Nelson Lecture Series was established to honor the late Dr. Lawrence J. Nelson and his profound influence as a professor at UNA for 30 years. This will be the fourth lecture in the series.

Both programs are sponsored by the University of North Alabama Department of History, UNA College of Arts and Sciences, the City of Florence Department of Arts and Museums, and the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area.
