FLORENCE– University of North Alabama undergraduate geography student John Crowell is the most recent recipient of the Merle C. Prunty Scholarship Award.

The Prunty Award recognizes “an outstanding geography student from the region” and is named after a legendary professor of geography at the University of Georgia.

The award is presented by the South East Division of the American Association of Geographers (SEDAAG), the primary geographical society in the South.

Crowell received the award (in absentia) at the annual meeting of the association held in Johnson City, Tennessee, Nov. 18-19.  He was recognized for his research on youth visitor dynamics in national parks.

Crowell is the first student from an Alabama university to win the award in the last 19 years. He worked closely with UNA Geography Professor Dr. Michael Pretes, who nominated him for the award.
