FLORENCE– Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) graduates will hear from the President of the University of North Alabama, Kenneth D. Kitts, Ph.D, during the combined commencement ceremonies for the Phil Campbell and Shoals campuses at the Florence-Lauderdale Coliseum.

Ceremonies will be held Thursday, May 14, 2015, in the following order:
Nurse Pinning Ceremony (ADN)
4:00 p.m. Woodmont Baptist Church; Florence, Ala.
NW-SCC Commencement 7:00 p.m. Florence-Lauderdale Coliseum; Florence, Ala.

Dr. Ken Kitts became president of the University of North Alabama on March 30, 2015. As chief executive officer of UNA, he is responsible for all operations and activities that serve 7,000 students.

Prior to joining UNA, Dr. Kitts worked at both Francis Marion University in South Carolina (1987-2011 and at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) (2011-2015). He taught full time for over a decade before moving into the administrative ranks. At UNCP, he held the title of provost and supervised a division with over 600 faculty and staff.

A native of Waynesville, N.C., Dr. Kitts holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Appalachian State University, and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of South Carolina. He also holds a post-graduate certificate from Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management. Dr. Kitts is the author of an award-winning book on presidential commissions as well as numerous articles, book chapters, and commentaries.

According to the NW-SCC Vice President’s Office, approximately 550 students have completed requirements for graduation during the 2014-2015 academic year. Approximately 230 students plan to participate in graduation ceremonies Thursday.
